I have no difficulty at all in placing the cursor in the display on my Mac running macOS 10.14.3. It goes anywhere I click straightaway. So I am afraid I can't help you with this.
Thanks to you both for trying to reproduce this. I was a bit surprised at my experience, so before posting it I tried (a) closing and then reopening SWP and reloading the file; and (b) opening it in SWP on a different machine (also running win7). All had the same problem, so I don't know what to think about it, except that it might be win7 issue, hard as that is to believe.
