## Small matrices

Hi
I want to produce in-line 2x2 matrices that are of small appearance. There doesn't seem to be a command or qualifier that allows me to do so All matrices that I produce are large as in display mode and that reads poorly when in-line.

My supervisor gave me this raw Tek code but I don't know where to put it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Phil

before the "begin{document}"

\newenvironment{psmallmatrix}
{\left(\begin{smallmatrix}}
{\end{smallmatrix}\right)}

In the text:

$\left(\begin{smallmatrix}a&b&c\\ d&e&f\\ g&h&i \end{smallmatrix}\right)$

$\begin{psmallmatrix} a&b\\ c&d\end{psmallmatrix}$

### I do not think you need to

I do not think you need to add the suggested text to the preamble (before "\begin{document}"). I think the attached .tex file produces a sample (the attached PDF file) of what you need.

Hi tomprice

Many thanks. It all went wrong because when I inserted the Tex field, I had it formatted as Maths not Text (that is ctrl^M versus ctrl^T) within Scientific WorkPlace and so the dvi file kept crashing. That was because I inserted the
TeX field in a (display) equation and it auto-formatted to Maths.

Since yours worked, I observed the difference in formatting and fixed my error.

Cheers and thanks so much for replying.
