the 2-column problem

pviton's picture

Background
==========

A couple of days ago I posted a report that
the 2-column setting under Document Format
wasn't working. I noted that in an earlier
iteration it had been, and suggested that
this represented a regression in usability.

Of course, there has been no response from MSI.
But I happened to be at my office
computer and I tried it again. This time it
worked as it should. So I decided to
investigate further.

Experiment
==========

Start SWP6.08 with the Std Latex Article.
Do Typeset -> Doc Format
Select the Page Layout tab
Check Enable overriding page layout
Change Columns to Two and click OK
Immediately do File -> Export Tex
Preview to see if you get 2-columns
Repeat the Doc Format steps to see
if the 2-col setting was still set

Results
========

A. Desktop, Windows XP/sp3
==========================

On Preview, 2-column setting doesn't work
On repeat, the col-setting had reverted to 1.
The top of the exported file reads:

\documentclass{article}

B. Laptop, Win7 Professional/64bit SP1

On Preview, 2-column setting doesn't work
On repeat, the col setting had reverted to 1.

\documentclass{article}

%% preamble

C. Desktop, Win7 Enterprise 64bit

Here, Preview shows that the 2-column
setting does work.
On repeat, the columns settingd been
reset to 1.

This was the computer I was using
when I previously posted that the
2-col mode was working correctly,
so in this respect there has been
no change.

Comment
=======

As we can see, the problem seems to be
that in cases A and B, the TeX export
isn't including the arguments
"landscape" and "twocolumn" in the
\documentclass declaration. Given
that, previewing is correct.

I don't know if it's relevant, but
computers A and B were not connected
to the Internet, while C, which worked,
was connected.

If that doesn't matter, then it seems that
the behavior of SWP6 can depend on not
only which OS the user is running, but
which version of the OS.

That would be especially surprising here,
since I wasn't really doing anything with
the system, just a few mouse clicks
before invoking the TeX Export function.

As far as I can tell,

As far as I can tell, selectin two columns via the Document Format dialog doesn't work.  I have entered this as a bug.

What does work is to select two columns using the class option to the Typeset, Options and Packages dialog.  Since there is a work around, this will probably be a lower priority bug.
